Fingering his mother, or fisting, whichever you prefer
It starts at a boxing club owned by some white guys in Thailand so we know they are up to no good. Time to meet the devil one of them say before he sets out to rape and kill a young girl only to get beaten to death by the dead girl’s father who was brought there but a cop with no uniform. The non-uniformed cop then brings the dead girl’s father to some industrial outskirts and chops the dead girls fathers arm off…
It is spectacular; every scene is close to stunning… visually that is. Where is the story? It almost feels like Nicolas Winding Refn is creating a new Cinéma du Look thing, it’s all about style and look but very little focus on story or characters.
You could speed it up, make a few fast cuts and it’s a music video.
Unless they are screaming in pain no one changes their face, none of the characters are alive. They are all dead in one way or another. The main character is emotionally cold and apathy, a man with unspecified issues but let’s blame the mother.
There are pink neon lights and Ryan Gosling is in it but it’s not “Drive” or as interesting as “Drive”. Feels like a step back rather than a step forward from the director.
“Cool” music and slow-motion, it is cool because people walking in slow-motion to music that is “cool”, sometimes it’s not even slow-motion, sometimes it’s just a character moving slowly.
